Environment
The environment is important to us. Our products sequester carbon for decades. The carbon sequestered is also significantly higher than the emissions generated by manufacturing our products. In addition, we only use certified wood. We are also constantly striving to improve our knowledge on climate change issues. For example, we have introduced circular economy systems in our operations that reduce the need for new raw materials.
CARBON SEQUESTRATION
Our products sequester almost nine times more carbon dioxide than the carbon dioxide emissions from their production.
Approximately one cubic meter of sawn timber sequesters about 750 kg of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to about 200 kg of coal. (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry)
In 2023, our products sequestered 33 545 926 kg of carbon dioxide, equivalent to about 9 057 400 kg of carbon. (Only the components that we produced are included, as the carbon bound in them remains for decades.)
ENERGY
We are self-sufficient in thermal energy, as the by-products of our production including wood chips, sawdust and pellets serve as our energy source. Therefore, we rely solely on bioenergy for our heat production. We also sell the majority of our pellets to energy companies and households.
POLLUTION
AIR
We use the by-products of our production, pellets, wood chips and sawdust, in our own heating plant, which produces low levels of air pollution.
WATER
We ensure proper waste water treatment in cooperation with a local operator.
SOIL
We use adhesives in wood processing, as well as small amounts of other chemicals such as lubricants, which are essential for the operation of machinery. Wash water is discharged into a cesspool to prevent chemicals from entering the environment. We also take care of waste disposal in cooperation with a local operator.
RESOURCE WISDOM AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY
We efficiently use all the raw materials we buy. The by-products of our production, wood chips and sawdust, are burned in our own heating plant and some of it is also distributed to other heating plants. We also compress wood chips and sawdust into pellets, which we sell to businesses and private consumers.
We recycle the cardboard and plastic we use in cooperation with our local waste management company. The strapping plastic waste generated on site is recycled back to the manufacturer, who uses it to make new straps. The glue is delivered to us in IBC containers, which we reuse or return to the recycling system.
